Under the 1989 United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Children enjoy four categories of Rights. The Child Care and Protection Act 2004 (CCPA) strengthens the legislative framework to ensure compliance with the CRC.

The categories of rights include:


  • Right to food, clothing and shelter
  • Right to health care
  • Right to life
  • Right to education
  • Right to play and leisure
  • Right to a name and nationality
  • Right to protection from abuse
  • Right to protection if disabled
  • Right to protection if in conflict with the law
  • Right to be heard
  • Right to express self
  • Right to information
